Loma de la Cunagua (Cunagua Hill)
The “Aera Protegida Loma de Cunagua” is a nature reserve located about 18 km east of the town of Moron, and about 75 km (1 hour) from Cayo Coco, see the interactive map at the bottom of the page. With a top altitude of 364 meters, the Cunagua Hill is the highest point in the mainly flat landscape of the province of Ciego de Avila.
It’s a protected wildlife reserve of approximately 27 km2 , perfect for bird and nature watching. At the top of the hill you’ll find some hiking trails, a ranchon-style restaurant and a lookout tower for panoramic views over the surrounding flatlands and out to sea. It’s possible to reach the summit by car.
Very few nature tours dedicated to "Loma de la Cunagua" are offered from the all-inclusive resorts in the cayos (Cayo Coco, Cayo Guillermo…). Guided visits are usually done by Ecotur, you can ask the Tour Operators representatives in the lobby of your hotel to arrange something with them. The Ecotur naturalist guides are highly knowledgeable and multilingual.
The excursions called Jeep Safari - Cunagua and Jeep On include in their program a quick stop at the summit to enjoy the superb views.
You can also visit the park by yourself, you’ll need to rent a car or taxi, there’s no public transport to the area. There’s a gate at the bottom of the hill, admission fee is 5 USD, and then a 7-km unpaved road leads to the summit from where the walks start. The park is opened from 9 am to 4 pm.
